TUCSON ADVERTISING HALL OF ACHIEVEMENT 2019 HONOREES ANNOUNCED / 07/06/2017 10:30 pm

HOA LogoTucson Advertising Federation Educational Foundation (TAFEF) and American Advertising Federation Tucson (AAF Tucson) have announced that Doug Martin and Mary Swiergol will be inducted into the Tucson Advertising Hall of Fame on Thursday, September 19, 2019. Sarah Hupp has been selected to receive the 2019 Next Generation Award. Don Regole will be recognized with the AAF Silver Medal Award. All presentations will be made at the same event.

The Advertising Hall of Fame seeks to recognize the very best among Southern Arizona marketing and advertising professionals who have led, mentored and inspired others to succeed in this industry, while preserving the legacy of our past and promise of our future through the next generation. 

The Next Generation Award, founded in 2014, recognizes those outstanding advertising individuals, age 40 and younger, who are making a significant impact on the industry through their leadership, career achievements, community contributions and inspiration to others to excel.

The Silver Medal Award program was established by the American Advertising Federation (AAF) in 1959 to recognize men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and who have been active in furthering the industry’s standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern. Annually, local advertising federations bestow this honor upon outstanding leaders in their communities. 

The Hall of Fame Awards event will take place on September 19 at Hacienda del Sol in the Casa Luna Ballroom, 5505 N. Hacienda Del Sol Rd from 5:30 to 7:30 pm and is open to the public.  For additional information on this year’s inductees and tickets, please Click Here.

AAF Tucson and Ad 2 Tucson are comprised of more than 300 local advertising and media professionals. They serve as a collaborative hub for a full spectrum of industry experts and bring together today’s leaders and tomorrow’s stars from the fields of advertising, marketing, communications, interactive and media. 

Tucson Advertising Federation Educational Foundation (TAFEF) is the 501(c)3 component of AAF Tucson, dedicated to facilitating education of the next generation of media professionals. TAFEF was born from a focus on the future and in making sure our industry’s next generation has access to learning opportunities they need to be successful. 

 

2019 AAF SILVER MEDAL AWARD RECIPIENT

Don Regole

 

 

Don was born on a farm in Geneva, Illinois and soon after, developed an interest in drawing cartoon characters such as Fred Flintstone and Mighty Mouse. His ability to create graphic images evolved and refined through college, which advanced him to graduate among the top ten graphic designers in his class at Arizona State University.

Don began his career as a senior designer in Los Angeles in 1983 working for clients in the entertainment industry including Universal Studios, Columbia Pictures, Playboy and others. He worked long hours and gained further insight into the creative process in addition to the operations of running a business. His love for Arizona lured him back in 1986 with a position as Art Director for DuVal Advertising, who had offices in both Phoenix and Tucson.

In 1989, Don transitioned into self-employment and opened Regole Design. He has since received numerous awards for creativity, national recognition in publications for excellence in graphic design, and has been exhibited in the Smithsonian National Postal Museum.

Attaining success can often be attributed to “giving back” and Don has contributed his services pro bono since the inception of his business: Michael Landon Tennis Classic, Tucson Pops Orchestra, Postal History Foundation, American Advertising Federation/Tucson and many others.

Inspiring students is another means of giving back that Don engaged for more than 25 years. Speaking to 3rd grade through university level classes, Don shared experiences with his creative career along with overcoming obstacles while navigating a path toward success in life.

In 1997, AAFT awarded Don the “Tucson Advertising Professional of the Year Award”.

 

 

2019 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Doug Martin

 

 

Doug was born in Owatonna Minnesota. He moved to Albuquerque after his parents divorced and his mom opened a restaurant in Albuquerque. Doug was always creating ideas for advertising, but his mom believed in "word of mouth".

After high school, Doug went into the Navy and then to the University of New Mexico.  He was still going to school when he walked into the top radio station KKJY in 1981 and applied to be a DJ. Although he didn’t have a demo tape, one of the DJ's overheard him and helped him record a demo. The station hired him full time for overnights, but the hours were brutal with school. At the station Christmas Party, he talked the GM into giving him a chance in sales. He got the job with the caveat that he had 2 weeks to prove himself. Fortunately, he was able to sell enough, and he remained in sales. In 1982, Doug went to work in sales for KKIM, a Christian radio station, where he was soon promoted to General Manager.

in January of 1985, Doug and his wife, Mary, packed up everything and moved to Tucson to manage KVOI, a station his boss was negotiating to buy. The sale fell through and the station was on shaky financial ground until Mary and Doug were able to purchase it with the financial help of partners, George Mehl and Tom Regina. Over the years, Good News Radio Broadcasting grew from one to seven radio stations…four in Tucson. In 2018, Doug and Mary sold their radio stations and opened a full-service advertising and public relations firm, Good News Communications.  

Doug has been a member of the Tucson Advertising Federation since moving to Tucson and has supported numerous AAFT events, as well as many other community organizations. He is Past Vice Chairman of the Arizona Broadcaster’s Association.

Doug is the recipient of the Lute and Bobbi Olson Community Service Award from the Salvation Army, the Tucson Parks and Recreation Commissioners Award and the LULAC/FBI Community Service Award. In 2014, AAFT awarded Doug the “Advertising Professional of the Year Award”.

 

 

Mary Swiergol

 

 

Mary grew up in New Jersey with five siblings, studied at Rutgers University, married Jack Swiergol, started a family and then headed west to Seattle in 1978 where she studied photography while raising a family in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Jack’s work took them to Phoenix in 1981. Another opportunity and a quick visit to Tucson two years later and it became clear that Tucson was the home they were looking for.

Mary began her career in publishing in 1985 working for a very small, local Tucson publication. When the owner of the publication ceased operations, Mary, with a partner and the grocery money, started THE DESERT LEAF. The first issue was published in October 1987 and in October 2019, THE DESERT LEAF will celebrate their 32ndAnniversary. 

With very little experience and knowledge of the industry norm it was easy to break all the rules, a practice that may have been key to THE DESERT LEAF's initial success. Mary is a strong supporter of Tucson’s non-profit community and THE DESERT LEAF has helped many organizations over the years. The publication has also received numerous AAFT Addy Awards over the years, a testament to the team’s editorial and graphic’s strengths.

 

Mary currently serves on the boards of The American Advertising Federation Tucson and Tohono Chul. She is also a member of WPO, WATT and Tiempo, all professional women's organizations.

Mary was the recipient of AAFT’s “Golden Pen Award” in 2011.

 

 

2019 AD PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR RECIPIENT

Steve Earnhart

 

 

Steve was raised in the mountains of Colorado – the younger of two boys, he spent most of his Summerdays fly fishing and the Winters shoveling snow.  He graduated from The University of Colorado, Boulder with a degree in Theater, and moved to LA to pursue his acting career…which meant he was a bartender for 5 years. 

Steve eventually realized it was time to get a real job, and was fortunate enough to be hired at Sentry Radio in 1998, a division of the National Radio Rep firm, KATZ Radio in LA.  After two years, he moved back to Colorado as a local sales rep at CBS Radio in Denver; but was quickly hired away to CBS Radio in Phoenix.  He eventually moved over to Clear Chanel Radio, then back to CBS Radio until he accepted the General Manager role of Radio Disney for Phoenix & Salt Lake City.  When Disney announced that they were shuttering the Radio Disney division in 2014, Steve was hired as the Senior Vice President of Sales for iHeartMedia and moved to Tucson.

Steve joined the Tucson Advertising Federation when he moved to Tucson and has served on the board since 2014, and as President from 2019-2020.  As a member of the AAFT Executive Team, Steve has worked to reimagine the Addy Awards, introduce new membership events and expand the board’s involvement in the community. 

 

 

2019 NEXT GENERATION AWARD INDUCTEE

Sarah Hupp

 

 

A Tucson native, Sarah has always held a passion for art and business. At age 10, she was an entrepreneur, selling her arts and crafts to family and friends. In high school, she participated in DECA. To pursue her passion, Sarah attended the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management and graduated Summa Cum Laude with her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration majoring in Management and Marketing. As a Marketing Coordinator with Eller’s Professional Development Center, Sarah had the opportunity to collaborate with staff and students on events and school promotions.

She launched her career at Madden Media as an Account Project Coordinator where she connected clients to Madden’s destination marketing solutions. She also took a position on the Ad2 Tucson Board of Directors as the Program’s Chair and initiated events that brought the Ad2 and AAF community together. As President of Ad2 Tucson, she had the opportunity to help launch a new website and build leadership and advertising community experience.

As her career continued with Madden, Sarah was promoted to specialize in digital marketing and eventually led the way for a new content marketing department where she became the Director of Content. Sarah rallied a team of content strategists and specialists, and hundreds of freelance writers and social media influencers to tell the story of how travel is more than a verb, it is an experience, a feeling, and creates a true transformation. She has contributed to national-level award winning campaigns featuring brands such as Visit Tampa Bay, Visit Oakland, Visit Amarillo, Experience Kissimmee, and Table Rock Lake.

In 2018 Sarah received her Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from the University of Arizona and graduated among the top 20% of her class. Her fellow students nominated her as the “Most Influential” of the MBA class.

Today, Sarah is the Vice President of Account Strategy with Madden Media where she leads the Account Management team and continues her passion for collaborating with clients on smart and creative marketing solutions.
